i found that after viewing these recordings, that the view of gould as an eccentric, as someone obsessed with isolation, was misguided–how he dealt with his fellow performers, the engineers, the recording masters, and the studio rats, even into the 80s, was charming, highly professional, and had a give and take–he was social with them, not social on his own terms, but social in a way that music is, a collective reaching to a common goal–they often reminded me of the drunken, bitchy, v. funny, and at the end, intensely intimate footage of elaine stritch and sondheim at the first company recordings–to deny the intimacy that gould felt for both the people who helped him make the sounds and even the audience, was a denial of his humanity–this small, chock a block show, with video, recordings, hi and lo artifacts (his petula clarke records!) (his piaons!) and photos, made him not the crazy asd legend, but a v. canadian way of handling the canon of eurocentric history
